I found myself in a fascinating conversation this past week in which I was reminded of the power…and safety…of connection. While at an evangelism training for pastors, I was talking to Sammy Gilbreath, one of our state evangelism strategists. He began sharing with me that he would soon be traveling to South Africa in an attempt to hunt one of the “big five game” (I found out that these include the African lion, the African leopard, the African elephant, the rhinoceros, and the Cape buffalo). He described a recent hunt for the African lion in which he participated. While hunting the lion, the guide stopped the group and explained that rather than tracking their prey, they were now being hunted by the lion. The lion had circled around behind the group and was waiting to make a charge. The guide immediately instructed the group to stand together with guns ready. After several harrowing moments, the lion charged! But just before they were ready to shoot, the lion diverted back into the bush. The guide explained to the group that the lion had paused his charge because the group had remained together. Instinctively, lions will not attack the group, but will go after the one that strays.
That story reminded me of our enemy the devil, “who prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). It was also a powerful reminder of how important it is for God’s people to stay in fellowship with one another…and how dangerous it can be if we do not!
This is precisely why we offer several opportunities for anyone to become a part of a small group in which each one can connect with other followers of Christ. I am so excited that we have just begun our family meal time on Wednesday nights, followed by ministry offerings for the entire family. At 6pm we continue to have a prayer gathering in which we spend time in serious prayer and Bible study. In addition to this, we have a Women’s Bible Study led by Debby Clements and a Men’s Bible Study led by Lonnie Cooley. Each of these met for the first time last week and had excellent participation! Royce continues to lead our students in a time of worship and Bible study in the Youth Room, while our children have begun again in the TeamKid ministry. Finally, beginning September 10, we will have our Sunday Night Home Groups meeting throughout the community. These are a great opportunities to connect with others and grow in your relationship with Christ. Of course, we also have our Sunday School ministry which meets every Sunday at 9:30am. Any one of these opportunities is a great way to get connected!
It is dangerous to be isolated in the wild of South Africa, but even more dangerous to be isolated in your faith! Enjoy the safety and encouragement of the pack!
Sticking close to others,
Jason
